Alcohol To Be More Expensive In Assam

The state’s liquor and wine prices will rise by 10-15%. It is a result of the November 24 Cabinet decision in Bongaigaon to increase excise duty. The tax on expensive liquor will be higher. Excise revenue accounts for the majority of the State Government’s revenue. The state government earned Rs 148 crore in excise revenue in fiscal 2001-02, compared to Rs 2,033 crore in fiscal 2020-21.

The department has set a target of Rs 2,400 crore in excise revenue collection for this fiscal year.To close such excise revenue gaps, Assam and Meghalaya have decided to raise wine prices at the same time. Dispur will hold similar discussions with Arunachal Pradesh. The state’s excise revenue has increased as a result of closing loopholes and preventing revenue leakages.
